How much water will my plants roots tolerate?

Many plants do not tolerate waterlogged soil or sitting in a high water table for prolonged periods. Know about your seasonal soil conditions before selecting plants. Refer to one of our trained staff members for help with selection of plants tolerant of damp and wet soil conditions, or use this website'sdatabase to search for plants in these categories

Please note: As a general guideline only -

Determine where your soil water level is by digging a hole 50-75cm deep.  Leave it open and observe the water level in it.  Does it fluctuate with rainy conditions and clearer weather?  If it stabilises at or above 30-50cm for prolonged periods (4-6 weeks), particularly over winter, then you really need to select moisture tolerant species for planting.

Saturated soil conditions for short periods (1-2 weeks maximum) are less of a problem as many plants will tolerate this condition, more so over spring/summer/autumn.
