How do I prune my shelter trees?

Leyland Cypress

Maintenance of this species and many others is most important in the first few years of growth.  Prune back low, heavy side branches to create a bush tree with plenty of inner growth.  Don’t let side branches get longer than 1-1.5m before cutting back by about one third to encourage new growth and good form.

Many conifers suffer die back if cut back too hard.  Therefore it is important to do this less aggressively and more regularly.

Willows

Mechanical trimming by a professional tree trimming contractor  is often desirable.

Willows can be subjected to hard pruning and will come away again readily.  Willows can grow up to 2 or more metres per year, so unless very fast internal shelter is required, they are most likely better planted as perimeter farm shelter, where they can be accessed by a mechanical trimmer when required.  Usually, to keep well trimmed and so they are not encroaching on land area, around every 2-3 years.  Trimmings are fine for stock to browse on.

Best time for trimming would be during dry weather.
