How do I plant Poplars and Willows?

Poplars and willows can be planted deeper than container grown plants.  This is because they will grow new roots out from the stem, right up to the new ground level.  This is a recommended practice to make them more stable due to their fast early, above ground, growth.

Poplars and willows can be established and are supplied in different forms.

  • 1 year rooted cuttings – Also termed ‘whips’ or ‘wands’.  Established in the nursery over one seasons growth from 20-25cm cuttings of narrow diameter (10-12mm).  They grow to 1.5-3m in that year and are supplied as bare rooted trees from June to August.  Plant to a depth of 30- 50cm.

  • Cuttings & Stakes – 1m and 1.5m lengths of larger diameter (20-30mm) 1 to 2 year old wood.  Driven or planted to 50cm+ depth.

  • Poles – 2.5-3m lengths.   50-60mm in diameter at the base. Supplied pointed and driven with pole rammer.  Protected from stock with 1.8m long dynex sleeve – suited to gully planting primarily for stabilisation purposes.  Ultimately a source of fodder when pruned.  Offer sun and wind protection to stock and long term have potential timber qualities.
