Changes at Matatoa
Last year we made a big effort to inform all of our loyal customers that we were undergoing changes at Matatoa for 2009. Whilst we have previously had a very large range of trees and shrubs grown by ourselves and often available in many different grades to suit a variety of jobs, we have made the decision to downsize our operation to allow us and a smaller crew to concentrate on core species, particularly with larger specimen grades.
Team members that are no longer with us include long time member Maggie Brown who was with us for over 10 years and has been helping customers particularly over the weekends all of last season. Maggie is spending this years weekends at dog shows as she has always been a keen kennel club participant. She will be missed by many of our customers. Our office is also now minus Dot, who some of you will have had contact with over the last couple of seasons. As a result Chris and Jeanine will be available on some Saturdays, and other Saturdays will be manned by keen gardeners and long time staff Jude, Christine and Graeme.
2009 will be a time of continuing to sell the remainder of our quality stock of species and grades which we are at present not planning to grow again in the near future.
Thousands of Quality Trees & Shrubs - Don't miss out
If you have seen our website catalogue in recent times, you will have noticed a lot of stock marked as SOLD OUT. We will be updating the website shortly to show all current stock available for 2009. We will continue to concentrate on producing an excellent product which has been given time to grow good root systems before passing on to our customers for replanting. Kicking off the 2009 season, we stilll have a large amount of excellent, quality trees and shrubs available.
Field Grown Trees - Winter 2009
POPLARS & WILLOWS will mostly be available in cuttings, stakes and poles this season. 1 year old field grown rooted poplar and willow trees have not been grown unless ordered in advance for this season. Orders need to be in by Mid August at the latest the year prior to despatch.
Ornamental Trees & Fruit Trees - Will be available in limited numbers and the grades and species will be uploaded with our catalogue very soon.
Sourcing Trees and Shrubs for you
We are able to quote to supply trees and shrubs not currently on our catalogue by sourcing them from reputable wholesalers. Please enquire if you are looking for particular species. Minimum quantities will apply.
New Online Catalogue Coming Soon
We are currently working on an up to date catalogue of all stock available for 2009 which will be uploaded to our web site within the next couple of weeks. This will be kept updated with items that become sold out regularly.
Matatoa will be at the Otaki Lifestyle Farmers Field Day
Once again we will be present at this field day which this year will be held on the 23rd of May at the Otaki Racecourse. We will have some good buys for customers on the day so come and see us and all of the other displays then.
Autumn Planting
Autumn Colours starting to Turn Now
The cooler weather is starting to change leaves slowly into their autumn colours. This is definitely an indication that the planting season is upon us. If you are looking for deciduous trees that colour up in the autumn, then plan a trip to Matatoa to check out our trees (usually by the end of May) before leaf fall.
Until our next newsletter, good gardening and we hope to be able to assist you either through our website or at the nursery Tuesdays to Saturdays. Don't forget we are opening earlier and closing later on Saturdays - 8.30 am to 4.30 pm.
Kind regards
Jeanine & Chris Hathaway & the Matatoa Team
