Acacia dealbata Silver Wattle, Mimosa
Excellent multi-use species, suitable for farm wind breaks and soil stabilisation. Nitrogen fixing. Coppicing and excellent firewood. Very fast early growth, but not planted as a long term tree. Attractive to bees. Salt wind tolerance. Crown is decked with sprays of small, globular, golden-yellow flower heads in late winter - spring. Will tolerate clay soils. 10-15m high.

Acacia melanoxylon Blackwood
Hardy shade or shelter tree especially enjoying areas of high rainfall attaining its greatest size in moist gullies. Suitable for shelter combined with faster growing species. Fixes own nitrogen. Lower growing and bushy when grown in open spaces, but taller growing for timber when planted in groups or in conjunction with other species. Prized by cabinet makers for its beautifully marked timber. Can coppice. Does not tolerate drought. 15-30m

Alnus cordata Italian Alder
Excellent shelter with long leafing period. Also makes a nice specimen tree with glossy green heart shaped leaves, and cones in summer. Responds well to mechanical trimming. Earlier leafing in the spring as compared to Alnus glutinosa or Alnus rubra. Alders are deep rooting and nitrogen fixing. They will tolerate drought, infertile soils and require less side trimming than willows and poplars. 15-20m. rate. Height 15-20m.

Alnus glutinosa Common Alder, Black Alder
Shorter leafing period. More tolerant of waterlogged soils than other alders. Very deep rooting. Can be coppiced for firewood. Fairly narrow crown. Responds well to mechanical trimming. Leaf litter which is high in nutrients rapidly decays, enhancing soil fertility. Timber useful for furniture and durable for any underwater purposes. Attractive, bushy tree when planted as a specimen. 15-20m high.

Alnus jorullensis Mexican Alder
Excellent specimen or shade tree. Attractive weeping birch-like foliage. Will tolerate long dry spells and heat. Rapid growing with clean, tapered leaves. Semi-evergreen in N.Z. Papery, pale grey bark. Can be trimmed for shelter or hedging. 9m high x 4m wide.

Banksia integrifolia Coast Banksia
Shrubby tree well suited to coastal farm & horticultural shelterbelts. Becomes very dense when trimmed regularly. Prefers light soils & full sun. Leaves are dark green and silver underneath. Flowers are large `bottlebrush' spikes which provide nectar for birds & bees. They are lime green at first then fade to pale yellow. Can be trimmed from 2-10m high or grown as a specimen tree up to 15m.

Casuarina glauca Swamp Sheoke
Most hardy of the sheokes. Wind tolerant including moderate coastal breezes. A spreading tree which tolerates severe pruning and retains lower branches well when used in wind breaks. Young trees prone to forming double leaders, hence periodic pruning improves form greatly. Tolerates moderately saline, swampy or peaty soils, but also dry soils and drought conditions. Good horticultural shelter. 10-15m.

Chamaecytisus palmensis Tree Lucerne
Excellent multi purpose species, although short lived (up to 10 years). Valued for providing nurse shelter so other species can get established due to the extremely fast growth rate. Nitrogen fixing. Can be coppiced, used for firewood and as fodder for livestock. Produces white flowers in abundance which provide nectar for bees and are relished by native woodpigeons. Very young seedlings can be frost sensitive. Good salt tolerance. Can grow 4-6m high.

Coprosma repens Taupata
Very hardy native shrub with glossy green leaves. Trim regularly to keep it compact. In exposed areas (especially coastal) it tends to be a low shrub. In more sheltered situations it can reach 5 metres or more. Great for shelter, hedging, filler or revegetation. 2-6m.

Coprosma robusta Karamu
Good pioneer species with shiny dark green leaves. Often in autumn orange berries are a feature and are relished by birds. Early growth is fast. Wind hardy. Will tolerate some frost, partial shade, damp soils and also dry conditions. Suitable for farm windbreaks and horticultural shelter especially when trimmed. Prune to prevent legginess. 2-5metres tall.
